Debating Competition

A group of junior and senior debaters took part in the Nottingham University Schools’ Debating Competition.

In a busy and fast-paced day, all five teams participated in the first four rounds of British Parliamentary style debating. With only fifteen minutes to prepare for each motion, the teams of two had to work together and think quickly, using only their brains and with no recourse to AI, the internet or any other reference materials.

The Junior Debaters - Adassa Machin, Max Bateman, Ella Cunningham, Sneha Khaira, Bella Collins-Bishop, Giselle Johnston, Zayd Rauf and George Walters - were all novices and the youngest students taking part in the competition. Despite this, they acquitted themselves very well and all Junior teams were placed at least second in at least one debate. Special mention is due to Bella Collins-Bishop who succeeded on winning a debate on her own, when her partner was temporarily unable to compete.

Our Seniors - Jasper Page and Matthew Hill - qualified for the Silver final where they placed second, ranking them sixth overall out of the fifty-seven teams that took part.

All the students involved demonstrated admirable resilience, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
